In short. Your lecture recordings and their transcripts stay on your iPad. Your folders, your slides and your annotations are hosted in Europe (Paris) so you can get them back. Mnésie shows no ads, sells nothing, does not track you and does not use your lectures to train an AI. The two options that send lecture content to a service provider (high-quality transcription, AI layout) stay off until you accept them. You can export or delete all your data from the app, at any time.
1. Who is responsible for your data
Mnésie is developed by Johanna Grace Fokui Noubi, an independent developer, who is the data controller within the meaning of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). For any question: fokuijohanna@gmail.com.
2. The data Mnésie processes
| Data | What it is used for | Where it is stored |
|---|---|---|
| Your account: email address and password (encrypted), or Apple sign-in identifier | Signing you in and getting your lectures back on your iPad | Host, in Europe (Paris) |
| Your organization: folders, course units, chapters, favorites, Trash | Organizing your lectures | On your iPad and with the host, in Europe |
| Your slides and documents (imported PDFs, notebooks) and your annotations (pencil strokes, text boxes) | Displaying them, annotating them, getting them back after reinstalling | On your iPad and in private storage with the host, in Europe |
| The outline of your sessions: date, length, the name you give, breaks, chapter | Filing your recordings in the right chapter | On your iPad and with the host, in Europe |
| The audio recordings of your lectures | Listening again, transcribing | On your iPad only (see the high-quality transcription exception below) |
| The transcripts, your corrections, your key moments | Reading and searching your lecture | On your iPad only |
| The laid-out lectures and what you accepted, rejected or edited in them | Rereading a clean version of your lecture | On your iPad only |
| Your settings (color, appearance, options) | Personalizing the app | On your iPad only |
The app asks for access to the microphone only to record a lecture, when you start it. Live transcription is done by Apple's speech recognition, on your iPad, without sending the audio.
Mnésie in the browser (app.mnesie.app, in beta): with the same account, you can read your folders, chapters and slides, from our host in Europe; the web app never writes to your account. So you can read without a network, your browser keeps your sign-in session and a copy of what you opened (local storage, on your device only). These are strictly necessary: no analytics or advertising cookies. “Sign out” deletes the session and the local copy. It is hosted by Vercel, like the site (section 6).
3. High-quality transcription
If the "High-quality transcription" option is on (you can turn it off in the app's Settings), after the session Mnésie sends a copy of the recording to our medical transcription service, Speechmatics, in its European region, along with terms taken from your slides to better recognize medical vocabulary. The copy passes through private storage with our host, in Europe.
As soon as the transcript is retrieved and merged on your iPad, the audio and the result are deleted from our storage and the job is deleted at Speechmatics. If you delete the session before it is finished, what was sent is deleted too.
4. AI layout and explanation of lectures
Only if you have given your consent (when you first open the app or the first time you use it; you can withdraw it in Settings), Mnésie sends to Mistral AI, a French company, through its European endpoint (the request is processed in the European Union):
- to lay out a session, when you ask: the transcript text, with its timestamps, and the text of your slides (including the notes you typed on them);
- to explain your slides, as soon as you import them into a chapter (PDF, PowerPoint, Keynote, photos or scan) or when you ask: the text and image of each page, with the parts of the transcript where the professor talks about it. After a session, the pages the professor talked about are explained again to add what was said.
Audio is never sent. Requests go through a function at our host in Paris, which keeps nothing. Importing your old notebooks in one go triggers no sending.
The proposed lecture is marked as produced by an AI. Each block links to its minute or its slide, and a block that is not based on your lecture is discarded before you see it. You accept, reject or edit each block; the result stays on your iPad and disappears with the session.
Explanations are also marked as produced by an AI. What comes from your lecture links to its slide or its minute; what the AI adds to help you understand (an analogy, a clinical example) is shown separately and marked "AI addition, to check". Your corrections are never replaced. Explanations stay on your iPad and disappear with the document.
5. Who processes your data for us
| Provider | Role | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Hosting of the account, the database and private storage | European Union (Paris) |
| Speechmatics | High-quality transcription, only if the option is on | The service's European region |
| Mistral AI | AI layout and explanation of lectures, only if you have accepted it | European Union |
| Brevo | Sending sign-in emails (your email address and your code, with no open or click tracking) | European Union (France) |
| Vercel | Hosting of the mnesie.app website (see section 6) | United States, global network |
| Discord | Notifying the publisher of an access request (first name and device, never the email) | United States |
| Apple | Sign in with Apple (if you choose it), app distribution (App Store, TestFlight), speech recognition on the iPad | According to Apple's policy |
Transfers outside the European Union. Your data is stored in Paris, but Supabase is part of a group some of whose teams and subprocessors (support, security, infrastructure) are located outside the European Union, notably in the United States: any such access is covered by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses included in its data processing agreement. Speechmatics is a British company; the United Kingdom benefits from an adequacy decision of the European Commission. Vercel, which hosts the website, is an American company: the technical data from your visits (section 6) is transferred to the United States under the European Commission's standard contractual clauses included in its data processing agreement. Discord, also an American company, only receives the first name and device of an access request, never the email address.
These providers act on our instructions and cannot use your data for their own purposes; in particular, the use of data sent to Mistral AI to train its models is turned off. If Mnésie adds a new processing activity, this policy will be updated beforehand.
6. The mnesie.app website
The website is hosted by Vercel. As with any website, each visit sends technical data to the host: your IP address, your browser, the page requested and the time. This data is only used to show you the website and protect it from attacks, and Vercel keeps it briefly in its logs. The website sets no cookies, does not measure audience and loads nothing from a third party: its fonts and images are served by the website itself.
7. Requesting access to Mnésie
On the Get Mnésie page, you can request an invitation to the beta, or ask to be notified when Mnésie arrives on your device. We keep your email address, your first name if you have an iPad (for Apple's TestFlight invitation), the device you chose and the date. This data is only used to invite or notify you, at your request (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR).
It is hosted by Supabase in Paris and deleted automatically 12 months after your request. The publisher is notified in a private channel, without your email address. To invite you, your address is passed to Apple, which sends the TestFlight invitation. To protect the form from bots, your IP address is turned into an unreadable fingerprint, kept for 24 hours at most.
8. Your voice may have been recorded with Mnésie?
If you are a teacher or a student, your voice may be in a lecture recording made with Mnésie. This recording stays on the iPad of the person who made it, for their personal study use; the app never publishes or shares it. If it is sent for high-quality transcription, the copy is deleted from our servers as soon as processing ends. If the student asks for an AI layout, the transcribed text of the lecture (not the audio) is sent to Mistral AI for that request only. For any question or to exercise your rights, write to fokuijohanna@gmail.com.
9. What Mnésie does not do
- No ads, no selling or renting of your data.
- No audience measurement, no ad tracking, no third-party analytics tool, neither in the app nor on the website.
- No training of AI models on your lectures, your recordings or your notes.
- Nobody else can see your lectures: each account can only access its own data.
10. Why we are allowed to process it
- Performance of the service you use (your account, your lectures, syncing): Article 6(1)(b) GDPR.
- Your consent for microphone access, for high-quality transcription and for AI layout and explanation, which you can withdraw at any time in Settings: Article 6(1)(a).
- Our legitimate interest in securing the service and the website, and in preventing abuse: Article 6(1)(f).
11. How long
- Your data is kept as long as your account exists.
- Items moved to the Trash stay there until you empty it.
- Copies sent for high-quality transcription are deleted from our servers as soon as processing ends, and the job is deleted at Speechmatics, which in any case deletes files automatically after 7 days.
- Text and images sent for a layout or an explanation are not kept on our servers; Mistral AI processes them under its terms, without using them to train its models. The laid-out lecture stays on your iPad until you delete the session, and explanations until you delete the document.
- Access requests are deleted automatically 12 months after the request, and anti-bot fingerprints after 24 hours.
- When you delete your account, your data is deleted from our servers and from your iPad; our host's technical backup copies then disappear when their rotation cycle expires.
12. Your rights
At any time, you can access your data, correct it, delete it, receive a copy of it, object to a processing activity or ask for it to be restricted. Two rights can be exercised directly in the app, under Settings:
- Export my data: a copy of your annotated slides, transcripts and recordings.
- Delete my account: deletion of all your data, online and on the iPad.
For other requests, write to fokuijohanna@gmail.com; we reply within one month. You can also lodge a complaint with the data protection authority: the CNIL in France, the Autorité de protection des données (Data Protection Authority) in Belgium.
13. Security
Exchanges between the app and our servers are encrypted (HTTPS). Hosted data is encrypted at rest by our host, and the database access rules ensure that each account only sees its own data. The keys for the transcription and AI services stay on our servers, never in the app.
14. Recording a lecture
Recording a teacher is your responsibility: check your institution's rules and ask the teacher for permission (at the ULB, for example, the study regulations require it). Spoken lectures and slides are protected by copyright: recordings are for your personal study use only and must not be shared. Do not import into the app any data that could identify a patient.
15. Age
Mnésie is for students in higher education. You must be at least 16 years old to use it.
16. Changes
If this policy changes significantly, the app lets you know before the change takes effect. The date at the top of the page shows the latest version.
